The City of Springfield has implemented a new law requiring drivers to stop for pedestrians if they are within three feet of a crosswalk.
The new law was approved in early November. An amendment giving bicyclists pedestrian status has been added, saying that if the bicyclist dismounts before entering a crosswalk, they are considered a pedestrian.
The law was made to protect children and the elderly.
Springfield Police have received a grant giving them funds to enforce the new ordinance. During spring of 2021, Police will be in plain clothes to stop drivers who don’t yield the right of way.
