(KTTS News) — The Missouri House has passed a bill allowing students to transfer to any participating school in the state.

Under the bill, only three-percent of students in a school district would be allowed to transfer to another school beginning with the 2024-25 school year.

Republican Gary Bonacker from House Springs says he’s worried what will happen if that happens in his legislative district.

“Really, the services that would attract students to our district would be the ones at the highest risk of being eliminated.”

Democrat Raychel Proudie from Ferguson spoke against the bill.

“Take your political bow if this passes, take your ‘W’. But don’t be disingenuous and say this has anything to do with children. It has a lot to do with political partisanship.”

The vote in the House was closer than usual, with most of the opposition coming from Democrats.

The bill now moves on to the Senate.
