(KTTS News) — This is the 12th anniversary of the Joplin tornado.

158 people died and more than 1,000 others were injured when the twister touched down on May 22, 2011 on the west side of Joplin.

The EF-5 tornado was the seventh deadliest tornado in history.

It was 22 miles long, one mile wide, and stayed on the ground for 38 minutes.

Satellite photos taken after the twister hit show homes and businesses destroyed by the force of the more than 200 mile per hour winds.

The National Weather Service documented the events surrounding the tornado.
