Press Release

The statewide gas price average in Missouri is $3.69 for a gallon of regular unleaded fuel, according to the AAA Missouri Weekend Gas Watch. That price is 17 cents more compared to this day last week and is 36 cents more per gallon compared to this day last year. Of the major metropolitan areas surveyed in Missouri, drivers in Springfield are paying the most on average at $3.84 while drivers in Cape Girardeau are paying the least at $3.39 per gallon. The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $3.86, which is six cents more compared to this day last week and 16 cents more than the price per gallon at this same time last year, according to AAA Gas Prices.

Missouri is one of 16 states that saw gas prices increase more than ten cents on the week. Prices at the pump continue to climb amid year-high crude oil prices. Crude oil prices are up by nearly two dollars per barrel compared to last week, maintaining a mostly steady ascent since June. Given that crude oil comprises approximately 50 to 60 percent of each gallon’s cost, the elevated crude prices could hinder the typical September drop in gas prices.

“Fall is typically a time when drivers see a slight decline in prices as gasoline distributors switch to winter blend, a gasoline formula cheaper to produce.” said AAA Spokesperson Nick Chabarria. “But crude oil prices, hovering around $90 per barrel, are negating any price offset at the moment.”

Drivers in Missouri are paying the 19th lowest gas price average in the country, according to gasprices.aaa.com.
