State Education Commissioner Will Resign

(KTTS News) — In a surprise announcement, Missouri’s education commissioner says she will resign in July.

Margie Vandeven plans to step down after serving a total of seven years.

Board members say they’ll start the process of looking for a replacement.

(Tuesday) morning, Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven announced that she will be resigning effective July 1, 2024.

The announcement was made during the Missouri State Board of Education’s monthly meeting in Jefferson City.

“Commissioner Vandeven’s announcement of her resignation at the end of the fiscal year gives us pause to celebrate the work of a transformational leader whose dedication to Missouri’s children has been unwavering and inspiring.  She provided guidance and leadership to Missouri’s K-12 systems during some of our state’s most challenging times, staying laser-focused on ensuring a quality education for every child. The Commissioner has been an outspoken advocate for our teachers and has promoted strong local governance and improved investments in programs to safeguard our children.

We remain committed to continuing the legacy of excellence she has fostered and look forward to working with her until her departure next year.” said Melissa Randol, Executive Director of the Missouri School Boards’ Association.

The Missouri School Boards’ Association is a private, not-for-profit organization that exists to help public school boards ensure all students succeed.
