(Springfield’s News Talk 104.1) – A Saint Clair man has been charged for shooting a Forsyth police officer.

38-year-old David J. Viner was charged with first-degree assault – serious physical injury or special victim and armed criminal action.

A report shows that the Forsyth officer was investigating a road rage incident near Highways 160 and 76 in Kissee Mills.

The officer saw a man on Highway 160 with a walking stick in his hand and decided to speak to him.

The man was later identified as Viner.

As the officer was getting a statement from Viner, Viner pulled out a gun and fired at the officer twice.

Police were able to capture Viner.

He is currently being held in the Taney County Jail without bond.

The officer was treated at a trauma center in Springfield and was released yesterday. The Forsyth police say the officer’s bulletproof vest likely saved his life.
